Why should I focus on soil health instead of just using standard fertilizer?
Fertilizer feeds the plant, but healthy soil feeds the ecosystem. Synthetic fertilizers provide a temporary chemical green-up without addressing underlying issues like compaction, poor drainage, low carbon, or dead biology. Improving your soil structure and microbial life creates long-term resilience, allowing your lawn to hold water better, absorb nutrients naturally, and resist disease without relying on chemicals.
How do I know if my property needs soil remediation or top-dressing?
Common warning signs include water pooling or running off during rain, hard-packed ground where a screwdriver can’t easily penetrate, thin or patchy grass that turns brown quickly in summer, and persistent weeds. We perform on-site soil assessments, such as testing pH, organic matter percentage, compaction levels, and biological activity to pinpoint exact solutions.
Will compost top-dressing smother or kill my existing grass?
No. We use ultra-fine, screened organic compost applied at a calibrated depth (typically 1/8″ to 1/4″). Grass blades easily push right through the material within a few days, while the organic matter settles directly to the soil line where roots and soil microbes need it most.
Does your compost contain weed seeds?
Absolutely not. Our commercial compost undergoes a high-heat, aerobic composting process that reaches thermal temperatures between 135°F and 160°F. This high heat completely sanitizes the material, neutralizing all weed seeds, unwanted plant pathogens, and harmful fungi.
When is the best time of year to top-dress and aerate my lawn on Long Island?
Early Autumn (late August through October) is the absolute best window for cool-season grasses. Soil temperatures are warm, weed competition is low, and roots are actively storing energy. Early Spring (April to May) is a strong secondary option to help turf recover from winter stress.
